About the Enrolled Agent Exam

The Enrolled Agent (EA) designation is the highest credential awarded by the IRS. Enrolled Agents are federally licensed tax practitioners with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS on all tax matters — including audits, collections, and appeals.

To earn the EA designation, candidates must pass the Enrolled Agent exam (formally called the Special Enrollment Examination), a comprehensive three-part exam administered at Prometric testing centers nationwide:

  • 1Part 1 — Individuals: Covers individual income tax returns, including filing status, gross income, adjustments, deductions, credits, and tax computation. 100 questions, 3.5 hours.
  • 2Part 2 — Businesses: Covers business entities (sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, S corporations), business income and expenses, accounting methods, and business tax credits. 100 questions, 3.5 hours.
  • 3Part 3 — Representation, Practices, and Procedures: Covers IRS practices and procedures, taxpayer representation, ethics, and Circular 230 regulations. 100 questions, 3.5 hours.

Each part can be taken in any order, and candidates have two years from the date they pass their first part to pass all remaining parts. The exam testing window runs from May 1 through the end of February, with registration through Prometric at $206 per part.

The minimum passing score is 105 on a scaled scoring system (approximately 70% correct). With focused preparation using Prometric-style practice tests, most candidates can pass each part within 2–4 months of dedicated study.
